FOXBORO – An all-star game typically is a display of raw-talent, flashy plays, and a disregard for defense in an effort to rack up some points of your own. The Select Hoops eighth grade girls’ showcase, featuring the best eighth graders in the area, was anything but an easy trip to the lane – as Team Select Hoops and Team Mass Premier combined for just 104 points, as Team MPC edged Select Hoops, 55-49.
Norton’s Rachael Johnson scored the game’s first five points for Mass Premier. Johnson finished with seven first quarter points, and added six more in the fourth to help her team to victory. The 5’8 guard corralled eight rebounds to complement her 13-points, which led all scorers, and added four steals. Johnson will be playing high school ball for Coyle & Cassidy next winter, and is a member of the MT Elite AAU team.
“She’s a very good player, and she hustles and plays with heart all the time.” said opposing coach Kaylin Reen, who coached the Select Hoops squad.
Fellow Norton star Kassidy Fields tied Johnson for the most points in the low-scoring affair with 13. Fields had six fourth quarter points, along with six rebounds, two steals and an assist that aided her team to victory. Fields, like Johnson, will play for Coyle & Cassidy next winter and is a member of the MT Elite AAU team.
On the opposing side, Select Hoops’ Brittany Raphino was all over the court. The 5’9’ Randolph standout scored four points, and grabbed 11 rebounds - which led all participants. Raphino also tracked down three steals, blocked a shot and dished an assist. Raphino is a member of the Bay State Magic Elite AAU team.
“She’s a really good athlete,” said Select Hoops coach Reen of Raphino. “She worked hard. She was on many of the loose balls. She out rebounded everyone and she can shoot, obviously a really versatile player.”
Samantha Hourihan of Bridgewater was a force in the paint for Select Hoops. Hourihan was second in rebounding behind Raphino with nine, and led all participants in the showcase with five blocks, along with having two assists and a steal. Hourihan will be joining both Johnson and Fields at Coyle & Cassidy, and MT Elite.
Hustling to the loose ball was a common theme in this low-scoring contest. Braintree’s Jeniyah Jones (Bay State Magic Elite) and Needham’s Mariana Jantzen (New England Crusaders) each led the way with five steals.
Nataliya Amaral (MT Elite) of Walpole went to work on the glass – grabbing seven rebounds in her playing time, as well as scoring five points for Select Hoops. Braintree’s Emma Hume (BSME) also grabbed seven boards, blocked two shots, and came up with a steal for Select Hoops. Both Hume and Amaral will be remaining in their hometowns to play for their respective high schools next season.
Some other notables for Select Hoops were Norton’s Jacqueline Conroy (10 points, five rebounds - MT Elite) and Westwood’s Hannah Bean (nine points, four rebounds - NE Crusaders).
As for the victors, it was a complementary effort all throughout the Mass Premier lineup. Needham’s Taylor Frazzette (MA Huskies) and Alex Poole (NE Crusaders) and Westwood’s Lauren MacDonald (NE Crusaders) scored six points for MPC. MacDonald tallied five rebounds, while both Rockets had four.
The game was close throughout, with Mass Premier holding just a 24-21 advantage at halftime. No team held a double-digit lead.

Boys Game
FOXBORO – The boys’ portion of the Select Hoops eighth grade showcase was more of what you would expect from an All-Star type of event – a high scoring 101-93 victory for team Mass Premier over team Select Hoops.
This game had ten players reach double digits in scoring, including a 24-point effort from Raynham’s Bryce Gallagher. Gallagher, a 6’2 forward that plays AAU for the Hock Valley Panthers, corralled six rebounds and two steals to complement his scoring outburst for team Select Hoops. Gallagher will be playing his high school basketball for St. Sebastian’s.
It was a guard heavy talent group that was on display at Saturday’s event. The smallest player amongst the All-Stars may have had the biggest impact – Franklin’s Nitin Chaudhury. The 5’5 guard netted 17 points, including three three-point field goals, dished out four assists, had three steals and seven rebounds. Seven rebounds for a 5’5 player – quite impressive. Chaudhury also plays his AAU ball for the Hock Valley Panthers and will be attending Franklin high school in the fall.
One player in particular who caught my eye right away was Select Hoops’ Spencer Aronson. Along with flashy assists and hustling up and down the floor, the 5’10 guard from Holliston scored 11 points in the showcase, and grabbed seven rebounds. Aronson plays for the Expressions AAU team.
Mansfield’s Khristian Conner had himself a day, leading Team Mass Premier to victory. Conner had a breakaway dunk in the showcase and scored 16 points. Conner grabbed eight rebounds, tied for second behind Westborough’s Matt Doherty. The Mansfield High prospect was tied for first in the showcase with three steals.
Select Hoops’ Riley Kramer and Brendan Kelly led the charge on the glass, chasing down eight rebounds apiece in their efforts. Kelly will be playing his high school ball for Hopkinton, and plays for the Hock Valley Panthers, while Noble and Greenough will be the host for Kramer’s talents.
Mass Premier held the lead for the majority of the contest, but their showcase victory was in jeopardy down the stretch, as Paul Roche (10 points) and Jay Dieterle (17 points) led Select Hoops with eight points in the fourth to continue chipping away at the lead. Roche and Dieterle also had two rebounds apiece. Gallagher scored seven of his game-high 24 points in the final frame for Select Hoops.
Some other notable performers on the day included Sean Leonard (six points, seven rebounds), William Goss (four points, six rebounds) and Charlie Campbell (five points, five rebounds).
Mass Premier was led by Kevin Oboy (15 points, four rebounds, two assists), and Jake Erlich (16 points, four rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a steal), both of whom filled the stat sheets in the victory. Oboy (6’1) will be attending Belmont Hill next winter, while Erlich is still undecided.
Other double-digit scorers included Matt Doherty and Blake Burke. Both players scored 11.
Sudbury’s Judson Martindale, Canton’s Devin Foster and Wellesley’s Alex Stoddard were all selected for the showcase, but were unable to attend.
